The motive of the ISM Code course is to come up with an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and the prevention of pollution at sea. The International Safety Management Code (ISM Code) is one of the preceding required regulations in the marine industry; a vital component of the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) Convention. In 2019 the ISM code was formally adopted and combined as a part of the SOLAS Convention and was created by International Maritime Organisation itself.
In the training, ISM code course, the trainee should develop, implement and maintain a Safety Management System (SMS) for the company; it includes the following functional requirements:
- A safety and environmental protection policy;
- Instructions and procedures to ensure the safe operation of ships and protection of the environment in compliance with relevant international and flag State legislation;
- Defined levels of authority and lines of communication between, and amongst, shore and shipboard personnel;
- Procedures for reporting accidents and non-conformities with the provisions of this code;
- Plan for action to prepare for and respond to emergencies; and
- Methods for internal audits and management reviews.
The purpose of the ISM course in India is to provide these Guidelines for those responsible for the operation of ships with a framework for the proper development, implementation and assessment of safety and pollution prevention management following good practice.
The objective is to ensure safety, to prevent human injury or loss of life, and to avoid damage to the environment, in particular, the marine environment, and to property. The Guidelines are based on general principles and objectives to promote the evolution of sound management and operating practices within the industry as a whole.
