What are the responsibilities in bridge team management?

In the past, there were many cases of accidents which occurred due to poor teamwork in the Navigation department. Poor Bridge teamwork has often been cited as one of the main reasons for these mishaps. It has compelled the maritime industry to have a closer look at the navigation practices which followed at sea.

In Bridge Team Management, the Navigation officers are the main focus of this BTM course such as Masters, Chief Officers, other officers and also for future officers; he/she would be in charge of navigation and watchkeeping like the pilots. Despite having advanced technology and new-era equipment on the vessel bridge, accidents related to navigation continue to occur. Girik is well aware of the same; for that, they have designed the BTM course accordingly.

The syllabus for this course is following IMO Model Course 1.22 “Ship Simulator and Bridge teamwork”. The course addresses the current requirements of STCW 95 section A-VIII-2 and B-VIII-2, Part 3-1, designed to meet the Bridge Team Management Course requirements detailed in Table A-II/I of the 2010 Manila amendments to the STCW Convention and Code.

BTM Course Content:

  • Situational awareness
  • Error chain analysis
  • Voyage planning
  • Leadership
  • Communication
  • Teamwork & command
  • Stress & fatigue
  • Decision making
  • Case studies
  • Simulator exercises

Modern electronic systems can indeed be useful to automate bridge tasks and thereby alter the balance of duties performed by the bridge department. However, this balance depends upon systems design, reliability and the knowledge of the officers to use it properly. Assumptions by the members not be taken for granted. The technology integrity must be identified in the bridge management so that there is no possibility of an undetected error occurring in future.

All members of the Bridge team have a part to play in this.
